Dallas, Visiting Cynthia

Our next stop was in Dallas to visit Cynthia, a colleague of David’s whilst he was working in Amsterdam… Just a background of Cynthia – she is tall, blond, attractive, and loads of fun.

On our way, we went into centre of Dallas to have a quick look around. Walked in the stifling heat to the spot where JFK was murdered. It seemed to us looking at the building where the shot was supposedly fired from that he could have very easily missed him. The car had just rounded a bend, and the shooter would have been firing from an angle. It would have been a much easier shot before his car turned the corner. However, there still remain conspiracy theories to this day about the assassination. Another unsolved mystery.

Now, before going to Cynthia’s, we decided that a nice cool drink would be the order of the day. Found a bar/restaurant beside a park/golf course. We were attracted to it because they had their misting sprinklers going – so we thought it should be nice and cool outside. Sharman saw a woman with a cocktail. Thought it looked nice and ordered it. A Cosmo. Yes , this certainly was a refreshing drink. David very wisely stuck with a coffee and water. And so we chatted on (as you do). An hour later decided it was time to move on. Sharman stood up, and then…..what WAS in this Cosmo. Yes, can almost see where the door is, but eyes playing up too. Whee. This lovely refreshing drink turned out to be double Vodka, Triple Sec, Cranberry and lime juice. Bam! Never again in the middle of the day!! Plus the effect was probably compounded by the extreme heat.

On arriving at Cynthia’s just after 6pm, we were greeted at the door by the above mentioned, tall, statuesque blond. We had three wonderful nights here. Definitely five star accommodation. Friday night we had dinner out at an authentic Mexican restaurant. Yummy meal. After a couple of hours though, we had to leave in a rush, as the music became far, far to loud for us. It seemed silly to have the “music” so loud that it drove the customers away. Saturday we were escorted around a very well known shopping mall called the Galleria. This is a huge four storied mall, each floor is about the same size as the Mega Centre in Albany, There is even a skating rink included to keep the kids occupied while the adults go and spend their money. We all had a good time just meandering around window shopping.

Saturday dinner was very special. Cynthia – bless her – had spent three days preparing a scrummy Mexican meal. Must admit it was unusual – think it was Tamales. Certainly could get used to this. Oh, yes the company wasn’t bad either... Slept in Sunday morning, as we so often do. That evening Cynthia put on a party for us. She invited Mary Leadbetter (a colleague of Cynthia’s) and her husband, James and two other friends, Barbara and another Barbara. This was a memorable night, of jokes, reminiscing, stories, Texas Tall Tales, and – yes – music. Oh joy. We sure do love music. James played the guitar and sang some good old numbers. He has a lovely mellow voice, and one of the songs brought tears to Sharman’s eyes. A wonderful night was had by all.

Monday morning left Cynthia’s and moved back to where our RV was parked up and being worked on in Fort Worth. This place is worth a mention; although it is a large city in its own right, with a population of seven hundred thousand, it had a different vibe to most major cities. Went and visited the Stockyards and watched a herd of Texas Longhorn cows parade down the street.

It felt like what we imagine a little old country and western town many years ago was like. The shops reflected this with their wide verandas over the footpath, big display windows, scrubbed wooden floors and old-fashioned service.

We even got a dose of Ft Worth hospitality. As Sharman got out of the car one day, she heard a man remark about the heat. When she responded with some comment, he said “Oh a Bl---y Kiwi”, and she said “Oh, a bl---y Aussie”. And we all got on great from there. Apparently there are a large number of Australians who live in Fort Worth.

All in all a great time in the DFW Metroplex, plus we got the generator fixed.

Next, Oklahoma
